author’s note: ok, i realize that it’s really mushy,
but i am a huge h/j fan so bare with me.
 
 
ACT 1. SCENE 1. Focus in on Rawley Academy. Morning.
It is the day before fall session, and students are 
milling around, signing in with their home room
teachers. ENTER JAKE PRATT. But this is not the Jake
Pratt that we know. She has grown out her hair a
little and she has it pulled back in two braids. She
is wearing a brown corduroy hip hugging skirt, a black
tank top,  and black sunglasses. She sees her homeroom
teacher’s name on a roster, and walks towards that
table.
JAKE: hi, i’m Jacqueline Pratt. i guess we’re supposed
to sign in here. 
the teacher leans forward. 
TEACHER: Pratt. Pratt. Ms. Pratt, Don’t you have a
brother that goes to rawley boys?
Jake coughs.
JAKE: Yeah, my twin brother Jake. But uh, he decided
not to come rawley for  fall session. 
She smiles innocently.
JAKE: So i guess it’s just me.
The teacher smiles.
TEACHER: Sign your name on the form please.
Jake does and walks away.
ENTER HAMILTON FLEMING. he walks to the table where
she just was without noticing her. She breathes a sigh
of relief and takes cover behind a near by tree.
HAMILTON: Hey there mr. baker.
Mr. Baker smiles broadly.
MR. BAKER: Well hello son. you didn’t have to come
down. i’d have signed signed you in.
Hamilton smiles slightly.
HAMILTON(glumly): Well i’m here, so I can do it.
He leans over the list and stops.
HAMILTON(points at list. sputtering): Mr. Baker-I
uh... did she uh.. was she just here?
Mr. Baker nods.
Hamilton swallows disbelievingly.
HAMILTON: Do you by any chance know in which direction
she went in sir?
Mr. Baker points in the direction of the tree. 
Hamilton turns around and sees Jake fleeing. he sighs.
HAMILTON: (absently)Th-thanks a lot mr. b.
 
 
ACT 1. SCENE 2. Jake’s room. A look around the room
shows that it is once again a single. Jake is
unpacking. There is a knock on the door.
JAKE: It’s open.
hamilton is leaning against the doorjamb.
HAMILTON: why didn’t you tell me you were coming back
Jake?
Jake freezes while unpacking. she slowly turns around.
JAKE: hi.
Hamilton crosses he room, pulls her into his arms and
kisses her.
Jake pulls away and wipes her lips with the back of
her hand. Hamilton looks At her with deep hurt in his
eyes,
HAMILTON; Jake-
JAKE: It’s Jacqueline.
Hamilton looks at her exasperated. 
HAMILTON: Fine. jacqueline. i l-
Jake holds up her hand to stop him with fear in her
eyes.
JAKE: don’t say that.
Hamilton looks at her quizzically he takes a step
closer to her.
HAMILTON: don’t say what?
He traces her jaw line with his index finger. She
shivers.
JAKE: what-what are you doing Ham?
Hamilton shoots her an innocent look.
HAMILTON: Nothing Jake. what do you think i’m doing?
Jake lets out a giggle grudgingly
JAKE: Are you trying to seduce me mr. flemming?
Hamilton says nothing. continues to gaze at her.
HAMILTON(huskily): Jake i love you.
He pulls her into his arms. She shakes her head.
jake (fists her hands, weakly bangs them on his
chest): no, you don’t. (shakes her head) you can’t-
Hamilton starts to kiss her neck.
JAKE: (word is spoken breathily) Possibly.
He kisses her and her arms go around his neck.
 
 
ACT 1. SCENE 3. Next morning. Focus in on Finn who is
setting up for his class which is held outside. focus
in on WILL KRUDSKI and SCOUT CALHOUN who are sitting
on the grass discussing their trip to st. Martin.
enter JAKE and HAMILTON holding hands(the quartet is
early for class).
WILL(fails to notice jake at first): what’s up hammy?
how was the rest of your-(sees jake) jake?!
Jake smiles pleasantly.
JAKE: nope, i’m jacqueline (extends her hand) jake’s
twin sister. it’s nice to meet you...
she trails off to let him tell her his name. will just
stares dumbfounded. focus in on what jake is
wearing-short jean skirt, red and pink striped tank
top, matching sunglasses perched on her head, and
little braids again.
SCOUT: will. his name is will. and i’m scout. (he
shakes her hand).
jake smiles
JAKE: well it’s nice to meet you. jake talked about
all of it so much i felt like i knew the people and
had seen the places. 
she leans forward and whispers dramatically.
JAKE: he failed to mention how cute you were though.
The boys laugh. Finn turns around and smiles at Jake
not indicating that he’s seen her before.
FINN: Ms. Pratt. I had the fortunate experience of
meeting your brother. is he also back at rawley?
Jake doesn’t miss a beat.
JAKE(shakes her head): jake fell in love with a great
girl back in new york. he couldn’t bare to be apart
from her, so he decided to stay in manhattan and go to
school there.
Finn nods and smiles. more and more kids began to
filter in. Lena is one of them.
LENA: hey hamilton. who’s that with-oh my god, jake?
Jake smiles.
JAKE(shakes her head): no, sorry. i’m jacqueline,
jake’s twin sister. 
Lena stares dumbfounded just as will had.
LENA: Oh. ok. is jake here?
Jake shakes her head.
JAKE: jake fell in love with a girl in new york. he
said he couldn’t be without her, so he decided to stay
in manhattan.
lena nods.
LENA: Oh.
she walks dazed to a  clump of girls and starts
talking to them. the quartet breaks out into soft
laughter. jake and hamilton, who are still standing,
sit.
WILL(leans close to jake so he can whisper in her
ear): You are jake right?
She laughs.
Scout shakes his head and rolls his eyes while looking
up at the sky.
SCOUT(equally as quiet): yeah of course she is man!
the group laughs again, and the class begins.
 
 
ACT 1. SCENE 4. later on that afternoon. classes are
done for the day, focus in on Jake and Hamilton
snuggling in the common room. ENTER RYDER.
RYDER: what’s this flemming? openly showing your
gayness?
jake stands.
JAKE: excuse me, i don’t believe we’ve been introduce.
i’m jacqueline pratt.
RYDER: jacqueline? you wearing dresses and
masquerading as a girl ow Pratt?
Jake shakes her head. there is a look of confusion on
her face.
JAKE: excuse me? i am a girl. jake is my twin brother.
RYDER: you can’t have the brother, so you’re scamming
on the sister flemming? (to jake) he only wants you
cuz when he fucks you he can think of your brother.
Jake stiffens at his harsh words. Hamilton stands
ready to punch him out. Ryder winks and walks away.
tears have sprung to her eyes as she falls back onto
the couch. Hamilton wraps his arms around her in a
comforting gesture, but Jake is still shivering.
 
 
ACT 1. SCENE 5. Early next morning. banks garage.
ENTER JAKE who knocks on the door and waits. bella
opens the door in a wife beater and boxers. she is
stretching. 
BELLA: Oh my god Jake?!
Jake nods, and the girls hug excitedly.
BELLA: Jake,
She puts her arm around jake’s shoulders and steers
her into the house.
BELLA: how are you here?
jake laughs.
JAKE: well, you know bella, i got on my bike and i
drove down form new york,
bella punches her arm.
BELLA: You know what i mean. i thought... i thought
that...
Jake shrugs.
JAKE: they didn’t say anything. I applied to  rawley
girls as Jacqueline Pratt. Jake is my twin brother. 
bella nods.
BELLA: i getcha. have you seen Ham?
Jake nods, a small smile appearing on her face,  but
it disappears as quickly as it appeared,
JAKE: yeah.
tears are streaming down her cheeks. 
JAKE: i just can’t  do it belle. last night we were
watching tv in the common room and ryder came in and-
bella: Rider's an ass whole.
jake nods.
JAKE: i know. i know. and i honestly don’t care. i
don’t give a damn what he thinks of me. but ham, with
everything during the summer... what i mean is, they
all know him. they don’t know me, and even if they
did, i don’t care. i can deal. but ham’s is... well,
he’s the son of the dean. he has all this
responsibility.
bella crosses her arms in front of her chest.
BELLA: jake you’re not really giving him much credit
jake.
jake narrows her eyes at bella.
JAKE: c’mon bella. you know i love him. he knows i
love him. i wouldn’t have-
BELLA (raises her eyebrows): You wouldn’t have what,
Jake?
Jake looks away.
JAKE: Nothing.
Jake starts to leave, but bella grabs her arm.
BELLA: No, Jake. You started to say something, now
you’re gonna finish it.
Jake sighs, and rakes her hand through her hair.
JAKE: If i didn’t love him I wouldn’t have (voice
drops to whisper) slept with him. 
Bella’s eyes widen. Jake nods.
JAKE: Yep.
BELLA (fights to keep the smile off of her face): Well
now you can’t dump him(shakes head in mock pity).
Jake’s eyes narrow.
JAKE(sighs. she is GLUM): I know I can’t. I love him
too much. It’s just Bella, it’s gonna be so hard for
him.
BELLA: Why?
JAKE: Because Ryder-
Bella opens her mouth to speak, Jake silences her.
JAKE: Just listen ok?
Bella nods.
JAKE: Ryder said if Ham couldn’t have my brother, he’d
settle for me. He said this cuz he thought he was
hurting me. But it doesn’t because Jake Pratt-the guy,
doesn’t exist! Ham and I know that, you know that, and
Will, Scout, and Shawn know that. But that’s it.
What’ll that do to his reputation-
BELLA: Who gives a shit about his reputation Jake? You
can finally be happy and-oh my God, you’re jealous.
Jake is taken aback.
JAKE: What?
BELLA: You think that Ham is in love with a memory
too. That memory is of you Jake. Yeah you were wearing
pants most of the time, but still he was with you. You
just said it, Jake Pratt doesn't exist. Only
Jacqueline. Ham loves just Jacqueline.
Jake nods and hangs her head.
JAKE: Yeah I know,
Bella throws hands up in the air.
BELLA: Than what is the problem here?
Jake shrugs.
JAKE: I just don’t feel right.
Bella narrows her eyes.
BELLA: I don’t care how you feel. Jake I love you,
don’t get me wrong-I don’t have many girl friends. But
you weren’t here over the summer. You didn't have to
deal with the sad moping Hamilton. Every single day
after you left, would go and sit in the common and
wait for you to come back. Don't you understand?
You’re his life.
Pause.
BELLA: Oh. Oh my God that’s your problem. You’re
afraid that he cares about you so much that you’re
gonna disappoint him. 
Bella smacks her hand to her her forehead.
BELLA: Well honey that’s one of the risks you take
with love. Because you do love him. Love wouldn’t be
thrilling or exciting if there wasn’t that risk. But
it’s worth it. Look at me and Shawn. Who would of
thought?
She smiles to herself. The girls hug.
 
 
ACT 2. SCENE 1. The Flemming house. Morning.
Hamilton’s room. Focus in on HAMILTON and JAKE who are
sleeping peacefully on Ham’s bed. There is a knock on
the door. Ham opens his eyes and smiles at Jake.
HAMILTON: What?
KATE FLEMMING: Munchie, do you want some breakfast
before your father and I go to work?
HAMILTON: No, thanks ma. I’m not really hungry, and
I’ve uh...(looks down at a still sleeping jake) I’ve
got some pretty entertaining stuff right here.
He squeezes her arm. She opens her eyes and smiles up
at him.
KATE: Well, ok. I’ll see you later hun.
HAMILTON(says this in between kisses to jake): Ok,bye.
 
As soon as he hears the door slam he pulls Jake up and
kisses her more passionately.
 
 
ACT 2. SCENE 2. Rawley Academy. Same day. Focus on
SCOUT CALHOUN. He is stomach down on the grass reading
Romeo and Juliet with black sunglasses on. ENTER WILL
KRUDSKI who is also holding a copy of the book.
WILL: What’s up Romeo?
He flops on the grass beside him. Scout laughs.
SCOUT: And who am I romancing Master Krudski?
Will shrugs.
WILL: I don’t know. How are things going with Paige?
SCOUT: Haven’t seen her since we got back.
Will nods.
WILL: That bad huh?
Scout throws him a sidelong glance.
SCOUT: What are you  yapping on about now Krudski?
WILL: Yapping am I? No what I meant was that you were
still hung up on Bella and yeah I know it’s a touchy
subject, but Paige was a summer thing, cuz you know
you’re not ready to move on.
SCOUT frowns.
SCOUT: I am so ready to move on. Paige is a great girl
she just wasn’t the right girl. And who says that I
need to move on? There’s really nothing to move on
from? Huh huh?
Will laughs.
WILL(holds hands up in mock fear): Ok ok. you have
nothing to get over. i’m sorry i mentioned it.
Scout nods.
SCOUT (with mock huffiness): Thank you. (starts
shaking his finger) Just never mention it again.
Both boys laugh.
 
 
ACT 2. SCENE 3. Later same day. Afternoon. Finn’s
class. The class is reading Romeo and Juliet. 
finn: Open your books to act 2. We need a Romeo and a
Juliet. Ham, you’re Romeo- Jaqueline you’re Juliet.
Go.
 
HAMILTON: Lady, by yonder blessed moon I swear 
That tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops--
 
JAKE: O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon,
That monthly changes in her circled orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.
 
HAMILTON: What shall I swear by?
 
the class is watching them in awe.
 
JAKE: Do not swear at all;
Or, if thou wilt, swear by thy gracious self,
Which is the god of my idolatry,
And I'll believe thee.
 
HAMILTON: If my heart's dear love--
 
JAKE: Well, do not swear: although I joy in thee,
I have no joy of this contract to-night:

Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be
Ere one can say 'It lightens.' Sweet, good night!
This bud of love, by summer's ripening breath,
May prove a beauteous flower when next we meet.

HAMILTON: O, wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied?
 
JAKE: What satisfaction canst thou have to-night?
 
HAMILTON: The exchange of thy love's faithful vow for
mine.
 
JAKE: I gave thee mine before thou didst request it:
And yet I would it were to give again.
 
HAMILTON: Wouldst thou withdraw it? for what purpose,
love?
 
JAKE: But to be frank, and give it thee again.
And yet I wish but for the thing I have:
My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite. 
 
They continue reading.  Finn is standing behind
everyone and is watching them with interest.
